What your fixed fee does and doesn't cover

The advertised fixed fee is per person and covers the standard legal work specifically described in this package. It does not include third-party costs, translations, interpreters, expert reports, counsel/advocate/barrister fees or substantial additional work outside the agreed scope unless expressly stated.

Additional work arising after submission, including correspondence or complaints concerning Home Office delays, is not automatically included in the fixed fee. We may undertake such work without additional charge at our discretion, but where substantial additional work is required a separate fee may apply.

Struggling to prove you're not a citizen of any country? We help stateless applicants build strong cases and avoid refusal.

If you’re in the UK and have no nationality—meaning no country considers you a citizen—you may be able to apply for Stateless Leave to Remain. This allows you to stay in the UK for up to 5 years, with a route to permanent settlement.

But this route is not straightforward. Applications can be refused if key evidence is missing, legal definitions are misunderstood, or the Home Office applies exclusion rules. At Alexander Boyd Solicitors, we help you get it right.

What Is Stateless Leave to Remain in the UK?

Stateless Leave to Remain is a form of protection for individuals who are not recognised as a national by any country under its law. If you can’t be removed to any other country, and you’ve taken all reasonable steps to secure nationality elsewhere, you may qualify.

This route is governed by Appendix Statelessness of the Immigration Rules. It is complex. Applications require detailed documentary evidence and legal argument. Many applicants are refused simply for not supplying the right information or not explaining their status clearly enough.

Who Can Apply for Stateless Leave?

You may qualify if:

  • You’re in the UK and not considered a national by any state

  • You’ve taken reasonable steps to gain or re-gain nationality and failed

  • You can’t live permanently in another country

You must be physically in the UK to apply. You don’t need an existing visa. But if you have another application pending (asylum or human rights), you must wait for a decision first.

Stateless Application Requirements

The application is made online using Form FLR(S). It is free to apply. You’ll need to:

  • Provide biometric data (fingerprints and photo)

  • Show you meet the validity, suitability, and eligibility criteria

  • Supply detailed evidence to prove statelessness and past efforts to secure nationality

Common required documents include:

  • Passport(s), visas, travel documents

  • Letters from embassies showing failed nationality applications

  • Birth/marriage certificates, medical or school records

  • Witness statements about your identity and history

Without legal advice, many applicants fail to provide the right documentation or misinterpret the requirements. We guide you through the work in your package.

Common Reasons Stateless Applications Are Refused

Applications may be refused if:

  • The applicant has another nationality or right to live elsewhere

  • They haven’t shown enough effort to obtain nationality

  • They fall under exclusion grounds (e.g. war crimes, serious crimes, UNRWA protection for some Palestinians)

  • They have used deception or have serious criminal records

Even if you prove you are stateless, the Home Office can refuse your application on other legal grounds. We help anticipate and resolve these issues early.

What Happens If You’re Granted Stateless Leave?

  • You’re granted leave to remain in the UK for 5 years

  • After 5 years, you can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR)

  • You may apply for support with housing and basic living costs while your application is being processed

Family Members

  • Partners and children under 18 can apply with you or later

  • They don’t need to be stateless themselves

  • Applications are free and follow the same settlement path

Why Legal Help Matters in Statelessness Cases

Stateless applications often fail due to lack of evidence, poor understanding of eligibility, or failure to address exclusion rules. These are not simple forms. This is not just about “not having a passport.”

At Alexander Boyd Solicitors, we:

  • Assess whether you truly qualify under UK immigration law

  • Help gather and structure evidence from multiple countries

  • Explain how to meet complex Home Office expectations

  • Address past criminal or immigration issues early on

  • Represent you clearly and firmly throughout the work in your package
