"I am truly grateful to Alexander Boyd for his excellent support with my Skilled Worker visa application. After a difficult experience with a previous application that didnt go as planned, I was quite disheartened."

🔴 What’s Changing? New Skilled Worker Visa Reforms in 2025

Recent Reforms to Skilled Worker Visas are the most radical in a decade. At Alexander Boyd we’re not just tracking the updates — we’re already advising clients on what they mean and how to stay ahead of the changes.

✅ Rapid eligibility assessments
✅ Emergency switching and extension support
✅ Sponsor licence strategy reviews
✅ Alternate visa route advice (e.g. Global Talent, Scale-Up)

As announced in May 2025, the UK Government will introduce a sweeping overhaul of the immigration system, which directly affects Skilled Worker visa applicants, care workers, and sponsoring employers.

Key Changes to the Skilled Worker Visa

  • Increased Qualification Level:
From 22 July 2025, most Skilled Worker jobs must be at RQF Level 6 or above (degree-level equivalent). Roles below this level (RQF 3–5) are only eligible if they appear on the Immigration Salary List (ISL) or Temporary Shortage List (TSL), and those lists are due to close by the end of 2026.
  • Salary Threshold Adjustments:
From 22 July 2025, the Skilled Worker route for new care workers and home carers closes completely. Existing care workers already on a Skilled Worker visa can continue until 22 July 2028, after which further extensions will not be possible.
  • Tighter Role Eligibility:
From 22 July 2025, medium-skilled jobs (RQF 3–5) are no longer eligible unless listed on the ISL or TSL. These temporary lists will be phased out by the end of 2026. In-country extensions and switching for these roles will be allowed only until 22 July 2028.

Care Worker Visa Route to Be Closed

The Government has confirmed that care worker visas for new overseas applicants will be shut down entirely. Employers will no longer be able to sponsor new care workers from abroad, though some exceptions may be made for those already in the UK or previously granted visas through now-cancelled sponsorships.

This change is intended to push care providers to recruit from the UK-based pool of former visa holders and invest in domestic training.

What This Means for You

Prospective Skilled Worker Applicants

  • If you’re applying under a role that does not meet RQF Level 6, your options may be severely limited by the end of 2025.
  • Applications made before the new rules come into force may still be assessed under current criteria — acting early is crucial.

Current Skilled Workers or In-Country Switchers

  • Those already in the UK on Student, Graduate, or other visas may still be able to switch to Skilled Worker under current rules — we can assess your eligibility and act swiftly.
  • We can advise if your role is likely to be affected by the new skill or salary thresholds.

Employers

  • If your business relies on skilled but RQF Level 3–5 roles (such as supervisors, technicians, or care assistants), you may soon lose access to overseas recruitment entirely.
  • We can help you plan a workforce strategy, review your sponsor licence obligations, and advise on alternative visa options for staff retention.
  • Employers must check if the role still qualifies under the new rules and whether it is on the ISL/TSL.

Skilled Worker Visa Solicitors – UK Immigration Experts

What is the Skilled Worker visa?

The Skilled Worker visa is the UK’s primary route for non-UK nationals to live and work legally under a Home Office-licensed employer. It allows sponsored workers to stay for up to 5 years and potentially settle permanently.

Who can apply for a UK Skilled Worker visa?

You must have:

  • A confirmed job offer from a UK sponsor

  • A role meeting the salary and skill threshold

  • English language proficiency

  • Valid sponsorship via a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS)

Skilled Worker Visa Requirements (Updated 2024)

Minimum Salary & Job Level

As of April 2024, most applicants must earn at least £38,700, or the “going rate” for their role. Lower thresholds may apply if:

  • Your role is on the Shortage Occupation List

  • You’re a new entrant to the labour market

English Language Requirement

You’ll need to prove your English proficiency through:

  • A Secure English Language Test (SELT)

  • A UK degree or equivalent taught in English

  • Nationality from a majority English-speaking country

Avoid Common Pitfalls

Many refusals happen due to:

  • Incorrect salary calculations

  • Invalid CoS or expired documents

  • Gaps in immigration history

We spot these issues before they become problems.

Settle in the UK: Skilled Worker to ILR

After 5 continuous years on the Skilled Worker route, you may be eligible for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) — a vital step toward permanent residence. We’ll assess your timeline and check your ILR application is complete and compliant.
